Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery Physicians Lead the Nation in First Single-Site Procedures With New da Vinci Xi Surgical System

AUSTIN, Texas—In late March, Devin Garza, M.D., a surgeon at the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center was the first general gynecologist in the U.S. to perform a single-site hysterectomy using the new da Vinci Xi Single-Site Surgical System days after approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Dr. Garza performed the procedure—which involves the removal of a woman’s uterus—on two patients following recent approval of this revolutionary platform. The system enables surgeons, in many cases, to remove a woman's uterus via access through an incision in the navel that is approximately two centimeters in length. This gives many women the option to have their robotic hysterectomy performed in a more cosmetic approach.

Additionally, Francis Buzad, M.D., was the first general surgeon in Texas and among the first in the nation to perform a robotic single-site laparoscopic cholecystectomy on the da Vinci Xi platform to remove a patient’s gallbladder. The new technology allows surgeons to better visualize the patient’s anatomy, therefore improving the precision and efficiency of the procedure, and reducing recovery time and the potential risk for complications.

“The new Xi single-site platform provides an increased range of motion, easier setup and improved vision for an overall better surgical experience for the surgeon and patient,” Thomas Payne, M.D., medical director of the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, said. “These procedures are among a long, growing list of ‘first in the nation’ cases for our surgeons affiliated with the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery.”

The Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery—an international treatment, training and research center that combines excellence in robotic-assisted surgery and outcomes with education and training—was launched in March 2011. It houses the world’s largest collective intelligence on robotic surgery, bringing together information on quality, performance and cost from nearly 100 hospitals across the United States. It also features an educational epicenter designed to teach best practices to hospital leadership, surgeons and surgical teams involved in the delivery of robotic-assisted surgery.
